Do it
yourself sliding window and door repair.
The Cowdroy range of replacement wheels, rollers and parts are ideal for those
worn, stubborn or dysfunctional sliding windows and doors. Common symptoms of
malfunctioning sliding components include the following:
*Excessive noise or grinding sound
*Extensive wear and tear on tracks
*Windows or doors do not slide freely
*Windows or doors feel bumpy when sliding
*Windows or doors are jammed
In most cases these worn parts are simple to replace and maintain.
The following guidelines may be of some assistance.
It is generally recognised as good maintenance practice to replace components in
sets (e.g. pairs of rollers or guides) in order to retain lifespan of
replacement parts as well as to maximise sliding performance.
Whether it be sliding flyscreen, patio, security or wardrobe doors, in the
majority of instances the procedure of removing rollers is quite similar.
Many rollers are adjustable. This adjustment may be actuated by either a screw
or a nut. Generally, bottom sliding systems are screw adjustable and top sliding
systems are nut adjustable. (Some roller assemblies are spring loaded and may be
removed easily). The following steps will help in the removal and replacement of
rollers.
1. Identify the adjustment mechanism (i.e. screws or nuts).
Should there
be no visible means of adjustment then it may be possible to lift and remove the
window/door without altering it's position.
2. Loosen
adjustment to allow window/door to lower. (In screw adjustment turn screw
anti-clockwise to lower. In nut adjustment loosen the nuts on the rear of the
race assembly to lower, then re-tighten slightly once window/door has
"dropped").
3. With adjustment now loose you should be able to lift and manoeuvre the
window/door off the track and guides. (See figure a. )
In some instances, such as glass patio doors, the removal of a fixed panel
may be necessary in order to remove the door.
4. Rollers can be removed from panels quite easily as most are either screwed,
bolted, clipped or spring loaded.
5. Assess your track for damage and cleanliness. You may want to clean the track
and, in some cases, your track may need a light sanding to ensure your rollers
run as smooth as possible. For windows, it is also an opportune time to clean
the outside glass which may be covered by your flyscreen.
6. Replace rollers and check that there is no movement. Re-install windows/doors
by reversal of the removal procedures.
7. It may be necessary to adjust rollers in order to ensure correct operation of
latching/locking mechanism if present.
CAUTION:
Take care when handling glass. For large doors a second or third person may be
required to assist with removal and installation.
